At the invitation of Hunan Women’s University, Dr. Boucquey, a professor in French and Humanity from Scripps College, lectured at HWU for three weeks during April 5 to April 25, 2016. Prof. Boucquey, president of the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association and proficient in such languages as English, French, Dutch, Flemish and Spanish, is a true language master.

During his stay at Hunan Women’s University, he not only taught the English education majors from the Foreign Languages Department Headline News: Advanced English Oral Expression on Current Events and Culture and Foreign Language Teaching in Theory and Method, but also taught Preschool English Education for the preschool education majors from the Education and Law Department. Prof. Boucquey carefully chose such interesting topics as Which Generation is Most Distracted by Their Phones and 13 Questions to Ask Before Marriage to discuss with the students in his Headline News class, while in the class of Foreign Language Teaching in Theory and Method, the students themselves designed the curriculum, invented games with reference to Prof. Boucquey’s book 100 Games and Activities for the Introductory Foreign Language Classroom, and had group teaching demonstration as they were teaching the students in a primary school. The student-based learning has been fully reflected in his classes. As a learning manager, he also gave suggestions on the students’ simulated teaching. His enthusiastic teaching, funny teaching language and rich facial expressions and gestures made his class lively and vivid.

Besides, he also gave two lectures to the faculty and students. On April 12, the lecture with the theme of Beyond IQ and SAT: Teaching to the Whole Person was held at 401 of Duxing Teaching Building. Prof. Boucquey elucidated the theory of multiple intelligences by Howard Gardner of Harvard University, a world famous developmental psychologist, introduced the three interdisciplinary core courses of Scripps College with reference to his 30 years’ teaching experience there, and shared his viewpoint that the students should be teaching to prepare for life instead of for standardized tests and the target of higher education should be teaching to the whole person. On April 19, the second lecture on The Advantages of Attending a Women’s College was held at 610 of Ruizhi Teaching Building. Prof. Boucquey talked about the differences between the matriarchal society and patriarchal society and the advantages of women’s colleges compared to the co-ed colleges by showing convincing examples, facts and statistics, and encouraged the students to face the society with self confidence and independence.

Scripps College ranks in the third among all the 43 traditional women’s colleges in the US, only after Wellesley College and Barnard College. This was the third time that their faculty taught and had exchange at HWU after establishing partnership in 2014. (Written and translated by Long Min from the International Affairs Office)
