Introduction to Hunan Women’s University

    Hunan Women’s University (HWU), the first public women’s university since the foundation of P.R.China, was founded in 1985. It is situated in the famous historical and cultural city of Changsha, the hometown of Chairman Mao Zedong.

    HWU is one of the three undergraduate women’s universities in China.  It is the sole women’s university co-constructed by the All-China Women’s Federation and the local provincial government. Mr. Hu Yaobang, ex-General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee inscribed the name of the university. Mrs. Wang Guangmei, the former first lady of P.R.China, had been our honorary president during her lifetime.

    The campus covers an area of 398,300 m2. There are more than 146 internship bases off the campus and 63 internship bases on the campus at various academic and professional settings. The library offers a collection of 1,233,500 volumes. HWU now has a student enrolment of more than 12,000 and more than 700 teaching and support staff, including 240 professors and  associate professors and 105 doctors.

    There are 8 colleges which offer up to 32 undergraduate programs. Since the implementation of the “Double First-Class” university project supported by the Ministry of Education, home economics and tourism management have been approved as the first class disciplines in China, and eleven other disciplines such as social studies, preschool education, tourism management and costume designing have been approved as the first class disciplines of Hunan Province. The graduates’ employment rate of HWU remains above 90% every year. In compliance with the university motto of “Virtue, Wisdom, Honesty, Excellence”, HWU is dedicated to cultivating students with the spirit of “four-selves”, i.e. self-esteem, self-confidence, self-reliance and self-empowerment.

    HWU has been designated as the first batch of Gender Research and Training Center under All-China Women’s Federation and Chinese Women’s Research Society, Hunan Provincial Civil Etiquette Research Center, Hunan Provincial Huxiang Women’s Culture Research Center, Hunan Provincial Higher Education Discipline (Women’s Education) Center and Hunan Provincial Modern Home Economics Education and Research Center.

    HWU is renowned for its unique way of teaching and characteristics in academic pursuit. As a member of Women’s Education Worldwide, HWU gives prominence to international exchange and cooperation. We have established long-term partnership with 30 colleges and universities of the United States, Russia, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea and so on. HWU has become one of the important windows of women’s education and communication both in China and abroad.
