Approved by Hunan Provincial Department of Education and Hunan Provincial People’s Government, President Luo Ting, professor and doctoral mentor, as a State Candidate of Millions of Talents Project in the New Century and a senior researcher sponsored by China Scholarship Council, has been on a three-month academic visit to University of Chicago in the United States of America from June 11th to September 7th at the invitation of Professor Colm O’Muircheartaigh, president of Harris School of Public Policy of University of Chicago.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />
President Luo Ting is participating in the graduation ceremony of the students of University of Chicago.
University of Chicago, established in 1892, is a world famous top research university. Since its foundation, in compliance with the school motto of Crescat Scientia; Vita Excolatur, it has absorbed the conception of Humboldt University in Germany and Newman University in UK and established its own unique and outstanding conception of research and teaching by combining the reality of the American society. Thus the prestigious Chicago School was set up. All these are fundamental to its importance in the American educational history and it is praised as the First American University. University of Chicago has produced a galaxy of renowned figures. For example Chinese-American physicist Li Zhengdao, Yang Zhenning and Cui Qi are among the 87 Nobel Prize winners cultivated by the university. At present, there are 7 professors who are also Nobel Prize winners working in the university. Mr. Obama, the American president, was once a famous professor in the Law School of University of Chicago.
President Luo Ting found with surprise and joy that two books written by her were in the library of University of Chicago: The Studies of Feminine Literature, European and American Literature, and Feminist Literary Criticisms Both in the West and China.
University of Chicago owns undergraduate institute, 4 graduate institutes, 6 professional institutes, college continuing education institute and a diversity of art and scientific museums like Museum of Oriental Research etc. The library of University of Chicago is one of the world’s biggest and best-stocked libraries with a book collection of more than 7 million. What’s more, Press of University of Chicago is the largest one among the universities in the United States of America. President Luo Ting and President Colm O’Muircheartaigh are communicating with each other amiably. With outstanding teaching and researching conditions and excellent teaching staffs, the Harris School of Public Policy is one of the 7 professional institutes of University of Chicago, mainly cultivating masters and doctors. In compliance with the spirit of assimilation and precise exploration of University of Chicago, Harris School of Public Policy advocates critical thinking, precise analysis and active solution and commits itself to establishing a world class interdisciplinary teaching and researching institute integrating education, research and innovation into a whole, with the aim of training outstanding would-be leaders, researchers, participants and constitutors of public policy for the United States even for the world. The school has 7 research centers, such as Health Policy Center, Culture Policy Center, HR and Public Policy Center etc, and it has achieved international research influence on social policy, international policy, educational policy, children and family policy, public financial policy and health policy and so on. During her academic visit in the United States, President Luo Ting has received strong support and concern from professor Ariel Kalil and President Colm O’Muircheartaigh who held amiable and friendly talks with her. Harris School provides President Luo Ting with comfortable research conditions like an exclusive office. All these are beneficial for her study on American higher education esp. women’s higher education and women/ gender policy research and so on. In August, she will also pay a visit to Mount Holyoke College—the headquarters of Women’s Education Worldwide, and Scrippes College—one of the women’s colleges among the Ivy League, in order to better study the famous universities in the United States, esp. the successful school running experience and remarkable teaching conception of the women’s universities. What’s more, she will also make efforts to seek deeper and wider communication and cooperation between our university and the women’s universities in the United States.
