Delegation of Scripps College Pays an Exchange Visit to HWU and an Agreement to Explore Cooperative

A ten-person delegation from Scripps College (SC) headed by Dr. Amy Marcus-Newhall, Vice President for academic affairs and dean of faculty, and Dr. Hao Huang,Bessie and Cecil Frankel Chair in Music, senior advisor to the president for international initiatives, had been on a visit to HWU from Jun.8th  to Jun.16th 2015 for a one-week teaching, musical performance and academic exchange.

 

Scripps College, member of the Women’s Education Worldwide, was founded in 1926. It is located in Claremont, southern California of the US. As a member of the Claremont Consortium which is praised as the Ivy League in West America, it is ranked in the third place among the women’s colleges in US. In August, 2013, Prof. Luo Ting, Chair of the University Council, paid a visit to Scripps College at the invitation of President Lori Bettison-Varga. Both presidents expressed their own cooperation intention, hoping to search for channels of cooperation in the disciplinary fields such as women’s education, women/gender research, music, art, English and economics. In June 2014, Dr. Anne Harley from Scripps College came to HWU for lecture and performance.

On the morning of June 8th, the welcome meeting and the signing ceremony of the agreement to explore cooperative relationship between two institutions were held in the conference room on the Second Floor of the Office Building. In the welcome meeting, Vice President Li Junbo and Newhall, on behalf of HWU and SC, respectively gave an introduction to the history, teaching conception and characteristics of their own university etc.

 

Prof. Luo Ting, Chair of the University Council, paid much attention to the visit of the SC delegation. At noon of Jun.8th, she met and hosted a dinner for them, with who she had an amicable and friendly talk about the details of the cooperative issues at the institutional level.

 

On the afternoon of Jun.9th, the panel on liberal art education was held in the conference room on the Second Floor of the Office Building. Vice President Huang Lihong introduced the distinctive cultural quality curriculum system and the unique campus culture of HWU. Then, Dr. Hao Huang, Dr. Newhall and Ms. Lei Yuqing (an international student from SC) delivered speeches respectively on the value of liberal art education, the liberal art education of SC, and why we need liberal art education. All of them expressed their viewpoints freely so that they got a better understanding of liberal art education.

On the evening of Jun.10, 2015, the Second Collaborative Concert of Women’s Artistic Leadership was held in the gymnasium. The SC experts and professors included: Dr. Piya Chatterjee, Dorothy Cruickshank Backstrand chair of gender and women's studies, and chair of Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies Department, Dr. Thierry Boucquey, professor of French & humanities, Dr. Anne Harley, assistant professor of music, Dr. Rachel Vetter Huang, adjunct professor of music, and Prof. Gayle Blankenburg, lecturer of music. During the one-week long academic exchange, they gave lessons and lectures to the students from the Women’s Studies Center, Foreign Languages Department, Art Performance Department and Accounting Department. The visit by SC has been an international academic exchange involving the largest number in departments as well as disciplines, and lasting the longest time since the establishment of HWU. It aims to promote open-up of the education in HWU and enhance the construction of related disciplines. With the continuous development of international exchange, HWU will make utmost to create more opportunities to invite more overseas experts to the classrooms of our university.
