In order to improve the teaching and research abilities of the teaching staff, and broaden the students’ international vision, Prof. Sally Bushell, Chair of English and Creative Writing Department of Lancaster University was invited by the Foreign Languages Department to give a lecture on “British Writers, Place and Space” in the lecture hall of Duxing Building at HWU on the afternoon of March 24, 2017. Ms. Liu Xing, dean of the Foreign Languages Department, hosted the lecture.

 

Prof. Sally Bushell gave a brief introduction to Lancaster University of UK and her own academic achievements. Afterwards, she shared her knowledge about three romantic poets from UK in the 19th Century: William Wordsworth, John Clare and Thomas Hardy. She expounded the relations among the scene, space and poetics, as well as the relations between vision and character of their poems through explanation and video appreciation, and showed different writing styles and literary attainments of the three poets.

The audience appreciated Prof. Sally Bushell’s lecture which revealed her solid theoretical knowledge, rigorous attitude, and novel academic insights. Her wonderful lecture brought new knowledge on the UK romantic poets to all the teaching staff and students and enhanced their academic and reading literacy.
